I’ve been doing a bit of pondering lately about how seeing a life coach is a little like going to the doctor.
Clients come to sessions and explain what’s going on for them (their symptoms) and the change they want (to feel well) and then the coach (doctor) can do one of two things:
1. Treat the symptoms
2. Look for the root causes and work on those
So if someone came and they were struggling to get things done, treating the symptoms could be putting time management strategies into place to stop them procrastinating or to prioritise the most important things first. A good result.
Whereas working on the root cause would be asking more questions to find the belief, fear or pattern of thinking that is holding the client back - which could be a fear of failure, not feeling good enough or an identity they’ve adopted to keep themselves stuck.
And by dealing with and exchanging this to something more positive, the patient no longer feels the need to second guess themselves and automatically gets the right things done. A great result!
What symptoms have you been treating? What could be the root cause?
